The Nov/Dec 2007 issue of Light & Life Magazine featured "The Vine," an article written by Michael Buratovich, the son of a grape farmer. I spent the better part of a year photographing the life of a vineyard. Seven of my color photos accompany Buratovich's words.

Welcome to the writing side of my website. I'm a Pacific Northwest author and photographer who grew up in a small farming community in northern California (population 5,500 at its peak). I learned to read before kindergarten thanks to an older brother, who taught me letter sounds.  For "graduation," he presented me with a beat-up flashlight, his favorite third-grade reader, and this seasoned advice: "If you hear the hall floor squeak, dive under the covers. They'll think you're asleep."

By sixth grade, I was so in love with books, it naturally evolved into a passion for creative writing. To prove that I meant business, I spent most of that year scribbling melodramatic stories that nobody ever read. I failed miserably at illustrating them, too, and tucked the collection away in a fat red binder for safekeeping.

The binder stayed hidden on my closet shelf and eventually ended up in a landfill east of town.

(P.S.  I'm still writing.)
